A Teaser/Detail.

A little teaser shot of my latest project based on the Baba Yaga. Definitely an exercise in control for me. The size of her head is about the size of my thumb. Will be full color when I'm done. Stay tuned.

Sketch-a-day 66 67

How about a little life drawing. Did these a day apart. Morning model and then the afternoon model. I really enjoyed doing the top model so much more than the bottom picture. All because for that one I actually had my bic pen. I have really started to hate sketching in pencil. I'm a real smudge king, and with the pen, it's always sharp and finished. Barring I don't butcher it with a mistake. Like on the top one here the head was pretty enormous, but photoshop saved the day.

So I can't post pics of my current project or my astronaut painting quite yet. I took pictures on my camera, but the memory stick wasn't in, and never thinking, I didn't realize I didn't have the cord to transfer those. So I'll have to retake or scan. I think I'll just wait and scan. These two weeks have flown by. Annoyingly fast. In the mood to do something tonight though.

Well, back to class.

Ok. I'm a little behind on my promise.

Updates are coming. Ended up just completely vegging out for the weekend and was pretty much just lazy. It was fantastic. But I got about 4 drawings to scan and a few photos (including the finished astronaut coming).

Consider this post "Mike's peace of mind." I felt weird not updating. But I'm pooped and I'll get it up on here tomorrow.

Till then, I put together this series of progress shots I was taking to pretty much document how I did the "Mad" Jack one for myself. Only missing the original pencils, but those were only a 15 minute sketch. You shouldn't miss it. Just a tiny bit of paint on the face on the first panel. If you want to know anything about the process, just ask.

Summer Painting Workshop

So I've been busy painting. Took the summer model painting minimester again. What is so amazing about it is, it's 2 weeks from 8am-5pm. Forces me to paint, and experiment, and most of all, stay mildly focused. If anything it keeps me away from marathoning Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Show is far too addictive. Here is what we have thus far, 4 very unproductive days in:

First is a WORK IN PROGRESS. Took my one sketch-a-day and adapted it to oils. That sketch a day can be found here. http://mpuncekar.blogspot.com/2009/01/sketch-day-004.html

Still has a ways to go, but the camera gets what I want, that is for sure. Going to have to push it to get the result there, and improve upon it as well. Really fun one to do, second one I started.

Second one here was kind of a warm-up for oils. Last thing I did with them was that disaster of a comicbook cover. This one is nice and simple, Took very little time and was incredibly fun to paint. No big story here, just a living corpse. Doesn't eat people or anything like a zombie, just looks snazzy, smokes a lot, and tends to be not dead.

So, this is the first of my updates for this class, hoping to pick up the pace a bit as I just can't get into it a hundred percent due to sleeping problems. I'm on the go to bed at 5-6am schedule, and I need to get back on something more normal, but the body isn't listening. This is totally making me like oils right now though. I must say, if you have to mix colors... oils is the way to go. Both of these are on 22x30 canvas boards courtesy of my lovely girlfriend, Rachel.

Critiques and comments more than welcome.

Sketch-a-day 62 63 64 65

Alright, wanted to post painting progress, but I keep forgetting my camera to take pictures of the paintings I'm working on. The cell phone ones are just too bad. In lieu of those painting pictures, I have 3 and a half sketch-a-days I rounded up to four, cause I painted quite a bit, and I have two finals I have yet to post coming up, and I'd rather spot light those in their own posts.

They all can't be winners eh? First one is my personal favorite by far. She reanimates corpses. The corpses have a habit of clicking their teeth randomly due to the soul trying to speak inside.

Also a little life drawing sketch of the one very popular CCAD model. Then one doodle, and one page of face doodles I don't exactly love.

Totally didn't post anything yesterday because I fell asleep for 13 hours after not sleeping the night before at all for no reason. It was a bad first day for minimester. I was pretty darn tired.

"Mad" Jack.

I live to tell the tales of Spring 2009 finals week. Only one in-class essay separates me from summertime. Feels good. Bit scary knowing I'll be a senior again.

But I'm back, and since I'll be in columbus for 2-3 more weeks without a job, and enrolled in a pretty freeform painting minimester class, expect alot of updates and for sketch-a-days to resume like normal.

This here is my styles and concept. Definitely a favorite of mine from this year. Hadn't really done any fleshed out portraits this year. Was a lot of fun, and I wouldn't mind even going in more and fleshing it out. This is definitely going to be included in some prints I'm going to get going over the summer, along with my website and revised blog. Woo.

Sketch-a-day 061

Sketched this out during critiques today.

Been odd today. Nothing but migraines and me being extremely late to a class. Wish I had the endurance I had sophomore year. Staying up till 5 to 6 in the morning every night is really starting to pretty much destroy my demeanor.

Also, this being finals week, I made the poor decision to start watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer after almost concluding dollhouse (one more episode then probably cancellation, it just got really good of course) and doing a season run through of Firefly while painting this last weekend. It's terrible, but I could probably use some more Joss Whedon. Bless that man, and his beautiful, daunting forehead.

I'm actually a bit bummed the school year is ending this time. I've had a pretty good year by my standards.

Sketch-a-day 060

Finally some art. Unfortunately I have no way to get my other two fine artsy pieces on here yet, as I can't find my camera charger. But I did doodle out this soldier concept today. Today was the hump and from now on things should get progressively easier in my schedule. Maybe.

Do not ever buy...

Black Cat India Ink from Dick Blick. It's crap and it's screwing my black and white inks badly. Worst ink I've ever used in my entire life. Goes down like black watercolor. I can't believe it actually is even labeled ink on the bottle.

Don't let the glass bottle fool you into thinking it's high end, especially with the HIGHER price tag. I feel like I've committed a sin by using this poor excuse for pigment.

Anyway... warning aide.. will have some fun stuff to post tommorrow... even my extremely poor black and white. Can't believe I'm going to turn this in.

Sketch-a-day 058 059

I'll hit 100 sooner or later...

So finals are keepign me busy. Sleeping all weird. Yep... Semester is ending. Did some sketching to take a break. How twisted is that? Eh?
